The History of Hayes Place

The history of Hayes Place is a long and complex one. It began with a double house that was built by Robert Hall opposite Hayes Church in the year 1600 on the site of Asshleys. In the years to come, it would undergo many changes including becoming a home for Sir Stephen Scott.

The building was believed to be constructed in 1790 in 1790, when William Dalton owned the land. In 1841, he sold the property to George Norman of Bromley. Charles Whitby purchased the house in 1895, after it had been occupied for a while by a baker.

The shop was later run by his son James Whitby and a newsagent, Arthur Carter. He remained in the shop until war and , when he returned to Hayes in 1928, the business was transferred to Ernest Sidney Poynter who lived in Hayes with his wife Elizabeth. Peter and Eileen Sheath took over the business, which they managed for Hayes Door and Window many years until it was sold to Simon and Sarah Butler.

One of the most striking features of this house is the walnut staircase with 57 steps. It is made of black walnut, butternut and takes 45 feet to reach the fourth floor.

On the ground level, there are numerous rooms that can be explored. The first floor has an office, a bedroom and a library, which has 13-foot ceilings. The library also houses the largest painting of Hayes by William Carl Brown.

23 Hayes Street
