Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

The Register of Exercise Professionals is an UK scheme for fitness trainers and instructors. It recognizes industry-specific certifications, offers public liability insurance and requires that members work within an industry code.

It was disbanded in 2020 and its members moved to CIMSPA. But what exactly does that mean for fitness professionals?

What is CIMSPA?

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) was an independent public register that operated through a membership program. REPs was an UK registered company and, as such, only covered the UK fitness industry. ICREPs, which connects international fitness professionals with international registers, has a worldwide presence. This means that if REPs-certified in the UK, you have portability to work as personal trainers in other ICREPs countries, such as Australia, Ireland, Poland, South Africa and UAE.

However it is vital to keep in mind that REPs is not a guarantee of employment or insurance cover for fitness professionals. This is because REPs is not a governing body, rather an industry-based association that is mostly voluntary to join. Top international certification bodies like ACSM, NSCA, ISSA, NASM, and ACE are not affiliated with REPs and will therefore never guarantee job or insurance coverage to their fitness professionals.

REPs is committed to keeping their members abreast of the ever-changing trends within the fitness industry. REPs employs an REPs point system that requires members to earn a certain number of REPs each year to keep their REPs status.
