Best Over-Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones

Noise cancelling headphones are a great way to maintain focus regardless of whether you're on a noisy train or in a workplace full of chatty co-workers. Sony's WH1000XM5 headphones are an excellent choice when it comes to premium ANC. The WH-1000XM5 came out in 2016 and is an excellent option for anyone who wants to listen to their favorite podcasts or music without distractions. This latest version of the line marks the first major update since its initial release and includes a number of exciting new features. Alongside sleek design and sustainable efforts (including no plastic packaging) the headphones offer excellent noise cancellation, crisp audio, and natural ambient audio.

The WH-1000XM5 has no rival in its noise cancellation when enabled. The strapping of a pair on your head creates a veritable cone of silence that will block out engine noises in trains and subways and the whirring of HVAC systems, and even the sounds of neighboring conversations. They're also among the best ANC headphones for blocking out low-frequency drones and bass hums.

Another feature that is great is Ambient Sound Control, which adjusts the acoustic balancing based on the environment you're in. For example, if you're at home listening to your favorite album, the WH-1000XM5 will switch to a more immersive listening experience. If you're walking on the street, they'll change to an energised profile to help you be more aware of your surroundings.

The earcups of the WH1000XM5 have a touch-sensitive gesture control on the right side. It is able to change tracks and play music. You can also pause or pause the music. You can also use a voice assistant to search for content, adjust volume and make calls hands-free. The headphones offer a rich stereo image and an even frequency response. They also have an incredibly accurate group delay, which helps them maintain the same soundstage.

The WH-1000XM5s is able to be connected to two devices at once. This is particularly useful for laptop users to listen to music while you make phone calls using your smartphone. They come with built-in microphones and USB-C charging port. They also come with a USB-C cable for direct playback. The battery lasts for about 30 hours. This can last you up to a week, or even a long flight.

Bose QuietComfort 45

The Bose QuietComfort 45 is the most recent update to the premium headphones maker's flagship model. It launched in September 2021 and undercuts the WH-1000XM4 from Sony and its sibling 700 by around PS320, $329, or 439 AUD. In terms of performance it has top-of-the-line active noise cancelling and features such as voice assistant support as well as automatic pause when you remove the headphones. The design is also more comfortable than previous versions. There are some things to note, though. The buttons on the back of the ear cups are now touch-sensitive and require pressure to activate, so it may be difficult for some to adjust to. You can adjust ANC, and toggle a "aware" setting which allows ambient sound to be heard. However, you are unable to remove the audio.

Nevertheless, the headsets deliver excellent performance and are an excellent purchase for anyone who is looking for the best headphones to wear on a plane, train or while working from home. They feature a long-lasting battery, excellent noise cancellation, and over-ear noise cancelling headphones clear sound. They also feature multipoint Bluetooth which allows them to be linked up with two devices simultaneously and switch between them by pressing the button. They also have an app that isn't quite as customizable as other competitors, but still offers many useful features.

The QC45s also come with an active noise cancelling mode that is very efficient. It can be too loud at times. The passive EQ modes are however more balanced and allow you to have more control over the sound signature of your music. If you're listening to music that has a lot of cymbal shimmer you may find your headphones grating slightly, but this is easily fixed by reducing 3-20kHz in the EQ of your music player.

The QC45s are top-quality ANC at a reasonable cost. Some may be disappointed with the omissions of some features, such as adjustable ANC/transparency, EQ, and some slight decreases in call quality. They are also comfortable to wear for a long time and have fast charging with the USB-C port.

Shure Aonic 50

Shure's Aonic 50 are a premium pair of headphones that place an emphasis on sound quality. Their drivers use a huge 50mm dynamic driver and they're packed with high-resolution codecs to give the best quality music playback via Bluetooth. The headphones have a well-balanced sound, with deep detail in all frequencies. They also have a natural feel of space and location.

They're a little heavier than the other models at 334g but they still are comfortable enough for long listening sessions. The headband sits on top of your head without applying too much pressure. The earcups are well-padded, making them very comfortable. They're also fairly portable - they fold flat and can be stored in their carry case, over-ear noise cancelling headphones which is an excellent feature.

Around the right earcup are standard controls, such as volume, playback, and power/pairing. You can toggle between neutral mode and what Shure calls "Environment Mode" with a slider close to the top. Environment mode allows more noise from outside to pass through it, which is useful in situations where you have to stay aware of your surroundings. The controls are well-designed however there is a slight delay between pressing them and the action they take (i.e. if you play the play button while you're on a call, you'll likely end up blaring your ears with music instead of picking up your mom). The phones don't come with microphones, however they do have an audio response provided by Google Assistant. Their mics are also great for filtering out background noise while on the phone.

The battery is expected to last for up to 20 hours for the majority of people. The USB cable is included to charge your phone. It's not as user-friendly as Bluetooth but you get to listen to your music as you charge. They are also compatible with audio devices with 2.5mm ports, so you can travel with them.

Monoprice BT-600ANC

The Monoprice BT-600ANC Bluetooth over-ear noise cancellation headphones come with all the features you want in a pair of wireless headphones for less than the cost. They feature high-quality Qualcomm aptX HD Audio, a cutting-edge version of Active Noise Cancelling as well as an easy-to-fold design that makes them easy to put in a backpack or carry bag. The headphones are great for students and commuters as they have an extremely long-lasting battery that lets you to listen for the entire throughout the day. The headphones also have easy-to-use touch controls that allow users to swipe or tap in order to adjust the volume or skip tracks.

The BT-600ANC headphones have an elegant design that is reminiscent of the Monoprice M1000ANC headphone that we reviewed last year. The headsets are gray in color and are not branded at all, so they aren't particularly noticeable in public. However, they do have an incredibly soft and comfortable fit that is ideal for most ears. The small size of these headphones and the included carrying case make them ideal for travel.

The earcups are covered in leatherette and provide excellent isolation through passive. The headband is also comfortable and provides plenty of adjustability without feeling too slouchy or bulky. The headbands are wide enough to accommodate glasses-wearers. They are suitable for most people.

Monoprice's ANC is effective and doesn't sound tinny like some other brands. It has a slight boost between 100-200Hz, which gives a fuller sound to bass notes. The opening of Good 4 U, by Olivia Rodrigo, shows a full response. However, they have a steep drop-off in the higher frequencies above 10kHz so the cymbal or shaker sounds won't be as crisp and clear as other headsets.

There are three ANC modes to cycle through high, medium and low. high. The low setting is great for reducing ambient noise, but it does not block out traffic and loud conversations. The medium setting will work in most situations. The high setting will keep you safe from everything but your music. The touch-sensitive controls on the earcups are a bit difficult to use at first. Swiping up and down on the pad controls volume and tapping the pad or moving it left or right switches tracks. Double-taps can also be used to stop or answer a phone. This system takes some practice to get used to, but once you get the hang of it you will find it very useful.
