Replacement Handles For Windows

Window handles are one of the most frequently used components of your double-glazed windows. As time passes, they may be worn down or rusty.

You will have to know your current handle's spindle length and its fixings in order to replace it. This can be done by examining the base of the handle that was previously used.

Handle

Over time, uPVC window handles and locks may be damaged by wear and tear, or even deliberate damage. This could mean that the lock or handle becomes difficult to open or close, or it's not even locked in any way. If this occurs, it might be tempting to replace the entire window unit, however this isn't always the case. Most of the time, it's the situation that a new handle or lock will suffice.

The most commonly used kind of uPVC window handle is the espagnolette style. This handle has an external spindle that is protruding out of the handle. It is inserted into a gearbox, which controls the multipoint locking system inside the window. It's recommended, when replacing a uPVC handle using screw covers to shield the screws from rust and ensure they remain secure. It is also possible to make use of a spacer or washer to create a more secure seal. Having a screw cap in place will also stop debris and water from getting into the handle and cause damage.

Hinges

The windows that are plumb help to avoid the need for binding, which means that the operating sash of the window is in line with the frame, which ensures that it opens and closes correctly. A new window crank can be replaced with little effort, but it's important to make sure you buy the correct size replacement. Make sure the replacement has the same in height as the previous one that can be established by measuring the distance between the guide for the crank arm bushing and the notch in the track that runs across the bottom of the window frame. Alternatively, you can determine the length of the spindle on your existing handle to determine what size you need for a replacement.

The type of window handle that you have will determine which kind of crank mechanism is needed for your casement or awning windows. Espag handles are equipped with a mental spindle in the back that is connected to the frame of the window and controls the mechanism. Cockspur handles have pegs that are fixed in their position by three or four screws which are set in the sash and the frame.

It's easy to replace the window operator once you have found the right replacement. First, take off any trim mounting screws that are on the window's casement cover and carefully lift it up to reveal the window operator innards (Photo 1). Compare the new operating lever with the previous one and remove any trim screws that are rusted. Attach the new lever to your window frame. Replace any screws that are rusted or bent. Then, you can place the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
