Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) is a UK-based scheme for personal trainers and fitness instructors. It recognizes industry-specific certifications, provides public liability coverage and requires that members work within an industry code.

It was disbanded in 2020 and its members migrated to CIMSPA. What does this mean for fitness professionals?

What is CIMSPA?

CIMSPA is the professional body in the UK for health and fitness professionals, is an industry recognised body that regulates trainers. Its purpose is to protect the public's interests when employing fitness experts by ensuring they have all of the relevant abilities and technical expertise and also training and insurance. It also has the responsibility to maintain and develop standards of excellence for the fitness industry.

The organization brings together input from a range of stakeholders including employers, NGBs and deployers as along with higher education institutions, training providers, and practitioners to shape the sector, and assist its professionals and workforce. This is achieved by working with the industry to better understand and identify the professional needs and the obstacles that hinder its ability to deliver.

As part of this mission CIMSPA offers the framework for a quality assurance system for fitness professionals in the form of an endorsement process. The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) was an independent public register that operated through an membership scheme. ICREPs, which connects fitness professionals from around the world to international registers, has a worldwide presence. It is important to remember however REPs is not a guarantee of fitness professionals a job or insurance coverage. REPs, which is an industry association, and not a governing body, is a voluntary association. The top international certification bodies such as ACSM, NSCA ISSA NASM and ACE are not associated with REPs. They will never offer employment or insurance coverage for their fitness professionals.

REPs is dedicated to keeping its members informed of the ever-changing trends within the fitness industry. REPs employs a REPs points system that requires members to earn a certain number of REPs every year to maintain their REPs status. These reps uk points are based on their level of education and the number of CPD courses that they attend.
