How to replace Window pane Window Panes

A cracked window pane is an issue. It could also be a chance to upgrade your glass to energy-efficient or insulated windows, and benefit from greater comfort, a higher the value of resales and lower utility bills.

You can do it yourself for only a fraction of the cost it would cost to hire an expert. It requires the right tools and only an hour or two of your time.

Glass

The process of replacing the window pane is simple and can be done by most homeowners who possess basic hand tools. Take away any broken glass pieces that remain. This can be done with a pair of pliers, but a flathead screwdriver may be effective in the pinch. Take your time and work slowly. It is best to work on a stable ladder rather than the ground and have someone stand below the sash to help keep it steady.

To allow for seasonal expansion or contraction, subtract 1/8 inch each from the measurements of the width and height. These measurements can be sent to a hardware or home center store to get an item cut from glass stock to the proper size. You can also cut the glass yourself, if you have the tools you need.

Before putting the putty on, make sure to knead it until it is soft and free of lumps. Then make it into pencil-sized strips. Apply the first strip to the frame's corner. Work from corner to corner to ensure it's even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's facets are small triangular pieces of metal that help secure glass into a window frame without damaging or scratching the delicate surface. Knowing how to use these hidden tiny helpers is simple and can save you money on a professional installation or the cost of new glass.

After removing the old putty, glazier points and any remnants clean the frame thoroughly using a utility knife. Lightly sand the frame in the rabbet grooves, if necessary, to smooth out rough areas. If you sand wood protect it with painter's tape to protect it from damage caused by accidental sanding.

Measure the empty frame's dimensions and write down accurate measurements. These measurements can be brought to an hardware or home centers store, and the new pane will be cut a bit smaller. This will ensure that the pane fits perfectly and allows for expansion and contraction.

Place the new pane in the frame and press it in place using your hand. Then use the point of your chisel, or the back end of the putty knife to make a tap on the glazier's facets, as shown in Figure 11. The glazier's points should be flush against the top edge of your pane and the shoulders should be just below the lip.

Apply a thin layer of glazing compound on the rabbet grooves and edges of new glass. This will seal and protect the edges. Allow it to dry completely and cure.

Install the new window sash after the glazing compound has dried. First, you need to coat the wood with an even layer of linseed. This will stop the new putty from drying out or cracking due to the moisture it absorbs. Apply the coating using a brush this coat, or the tip of the putty blade. Then use the chisel on the back of the tool or the back of the handle to gently hammer the new sash or glazier's tip into the grooves of the rabbet. Repeat this process at intervals of 10 inches all around the frame.

Putty

A baseball thrown or a rock thrown by error or a branch falling can cause a broken or cracked window pane. Most windows can be replaced easily by simply putting in a fresh piece. The glass is held in place with tiny metal clips known as a glazier's point and putty, also called glazing compound. Before installing a new pane, first take out the old one and clean up the area with an abrasive and the pull-type paint scraper or an abrasive wood chisel. Wear protective glasses and gloves while working. If the window is secured to the frame, you'll need use a heat gun to soften the adhesive before prying it free.

If you are planning to install your original sash, remove the molding that supports the old pane. Then sand the sash to ensure it's smooth and ready for a new caulk. Once the sash is installed, apply a new caulk made of silicone around the glass to ensure that it won't leak or discolor in time.

Take out the glazing points in the rabbets. These are the grooves in the sash, which is where the glass is. If they're hard to chisel, use an instrument like a heat gun over them to soften first. When using a heating tool, be sure to not scratch the sash or its railings.

Make the bed for your new pane after you have removed the old putty and double glazing window replacement points. Roll a piece of glazing compound between your hands, forming it to be around 1/2-inch thick. Place it into the rabbets, where the glass will be put. It's important that the glass is positioned against the putty in all places on each side, so if you need to do so, gently tap the glass into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane has a crack then you can seal it with a solvent-based glue or silicone caulk prior to pressing it into the sash. If not, you'll have to apply putty on the crack to form a tight seal and keep water out. After the putty is dry and the film is oily, wipe it off the glass with a rag and allow it to completely dry before painting. If you paint before the putty has completely dry, it will not form an effective seal and could discolor or leak in time.

Paint

If you've had a broken window pane, you may be concerned about the expense of replacing it. However, replacing one glass pane does not have to break the bank if you do it yourself. In fact, even a double glazed window replacement-pane window can be replaced at a fraction of the cost of a professional.

If you are working with large glass windows, first make sure it is securely attached to the frame. Using the proper tools and techniques, you can make this task relatively easy and quick.

If you're ready to begin taking off the old window replacement panes pane by prying out the metal glazing points that are connected to it. These are basically small metal triangles which function as "nails" that keep the window in place within the frame of wood.
