About Avon Publishing

In 1941, the company was established by the American News Corporation as a rival to Pocket Books, Avon Books initially published a wide range of genres. They entered the romance field with Kathleen Woodiwiss's 1972 novel The Flame and the Flower following which they became a powerhouse in the industry. Avon changed its focus to romance after Newscorp acquired Hearst's publishing division in 1999 and then merged it with Harper Collins. HarperCollins owns Avon, as well as Harlequin.

Initially, Avon published digest-sized paperbacks (similar to the current Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine) in series like Avon Western Reader and Avon Science Fiction Reader. They also published a few comic books. Joseph Meyers hired a staff of highly experienced and well-connected editors which included Donald A. Wollheim, whose science fiction and fantasy tales have been highly prized by collectors.

Avon as a paperback publishing company, was among the first companies to recognize women as a huge market that was underserved. Sales agents employed by the company were mostly middle-class women and, as such, Avon sought to appeal to women with books that were entertaining and intellectually stimulating.
