Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) is a UK-based program for personal trainers and fitness instructors. It recognizes qualifications based on industry and provides public liability insurance and requires that members work within an industry code of practice.

It was disbanded in the year 2020 and its members migrated to CIMSPA. What does this mean for fitness professionals?

What is CIMSPA?

CIMSPA is a UK-based professional organization for health and fitness professionals. It is a well-known industry body that regulates trainers. Its mission is safeguarding the public's interests in employing fitness experts by ensuring that they possess all the necessary abilities and technical expertise in addition to training and insurance. It also has the responsibility to develop and maintain standards of excellence for the fitness industry.

The organization brings together input from a wide range of stakeholders including employers NGBs and deployers, as well as higher education institutions, shopwithmyrep/avon (www.vrijschrift.Org) training providers and practitioners in order to shape the industry and assist its professionals and workforce. This is achieved by working in collaboration with the industry to understand and identify the professional needs and the barriers that affect its ability to deliver.

As part of its mission, CIMSPA offers the basis for a quality assurance system for the fitness industry through an endorsement process. This process is a way to recognize both the content and the quality of formal qualifications and training. CIMSPA generally endorses controlled (Ofqual), qualifications that are certified by an approved awarding organization such as Focus Awards or Active IQ and other kinds of continuing professional development (CPD) training.

Membership of CIMSPA also comes with a degree of status within the industry. It enables members to access special insurance coverage, which includes public liability cover of up to PS10 million and personal accident insurance. It also gives the record of their professional development, enables members to take no-cost e-learning courses, and provides access to an online career portal that is updated regularly with job openings.

The body is also a member of the International Confederation of Registers for Exercise Professionals (ICREPs), meaning that its members can utilize their registration to work abroad provided they have the relevant qualification. The organisation strives to set a standard that is consistent across the globe to aid in the growth of the industry.

The body is a non-profit organization and works in partnership with the industry to offer assistance, guidance, and education. The CIMSPA Academy also offers its members free eLearning classes on a variety of subjects relevant to the industry.

Are REPs certificates recognized internationally?

The Register of Exercise Professionals was an independent public registry, which operated via a membership system. It was established to safeguard the public and to give employers and fitness professionals the assurance they needed that an individual held qualifications that were recognised and endorsed and in line with National Occupational Standards.

REPs is a UK-based registry, and as such only covers the UK fitness sector. It was not a requirement to be registered with REPs, however it gave clients confidence that their fitness trainer was certified and Avon Rep in My Area operated to the highest standards.

In 2020, REPs will be sold to UK Coaching. An agreement with CIMSPA has been signed that will merge the REPs Directory with the CIMSPA directory. Fitness professionals still have the option to join both REPs and CIMSPA however, renewing REPs membership is not longer an option.

While REPs is no longer operating in the UK but they do have global reach through ICREPs which connects international registers and fitness professionals. If you are an REPs-registered personal trainer in the UK and you are a REPs registered personal trainer, you can work as a personal training in other ICREPs countries such as Australia. Ireland, Poland, South Africa, and UAE.

It is important to know however that REPs does not guarantee fitness professionals a job or insurance coverage. REPs is an industry association and not a governing authority, is a voluntary organization. Top international certification bodies like ACSM, NSCA ISSA NASM and ACE are not affiliated with REPs. They do not offer employment or insurance coverage for their fitness professionals.

In addition REPs is committed keeping their members up-to-date with the constantly changing trends in the fitness industry. REPs uses an REPs point system that requires members to earn a specific amount of REPs each year to maintain their REPs status. These REPs are based on the level of qualification that the member has and how many CPD courses they have completed.
