How to Replace Window Glass

Replacing glass in windows that are cracked or broken can be a difficult task. Luckily, this is one project you can tackle yourself.

Before beginning the replacement process, you must put on a pair of gloves and safety goggles to shield your hands from cuts. Remove the old window panel replacement by slicing the glazing beadwork using the chisel or utility knife or another tool.

Take off the old glass

First, remove the old glass. Although this may seem a simple job but there are a few things you should remember before starting. It is crucial to wear the appropriate safety equipment. Wear gloves that are thick with leather palms, sturdy shoes or boots, and a long-sleeved shirt. This will protect your skin from glass fragments that can cut your skin. You'll need a putty knife in order to take away the glazing that keeps the glass in place and you should also scrape the wood around the frame. After you have cleared the frame of any debris, soak the remaining window film in an equal amount of warm water and mild liquid soap. Soak the film for a few hours, and then cover it with a plastic drop sheet or garbage bag to seal in the moisture.

When the film is saturated it is time to remove it. You will need to measure the replacement glass and can find it in many hardware stores and home improvement centers. To avoid future cracking you must always purchase replacement glass that is 1/16 inch smaller than the opening.

When you take off the old glass, be extremely careful not to scratch any of the other panes of the window. If you break one of the other panes you'll need to replace window cost them all, which could be expensive.

Before you begin working, place a piece if tape over the area of the broken glass. This will prevent the broken glass from flying around the room as you work on taking it off. To account for frame expansion and contraction, subtract 1/8 inch (or the lengthiest measurement) from both measurements.

Measuring the glass is the most important aspect of replacing a window pane since it determines whether the frame can be able to accommodate the new glass. The frames of older homes typically have a range of measurements, which can make it difficult to find an appropriate replacement. You can avoid this by using a tape measure. Install the new glass
