Best Over-Ear Headphones

Over-ear headphones, unlike earbuds, can completely surround the ears. They also allow for larger drivers that deliver deeper bass and a larger soundstage. Many include Bluetooth technology and active noise cancellation.

1. Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless

Sony has improved on an already great pair of headphones with the WH-1000XM4 beats studio3 Wireless noise cancelling over ear headphones. They're lighter, feel better constructed, and have a more balanced sound profile (though still bass-heavy), and include an app that lets you do some audio-related customization. Their active noise cancelling works better than ever before, removing any background noise. Additionally, they have a longer continuous battery life than other models.

These headphones are Bluetooth 5.0 compatible, and Sony LDAC is also compatible with. The latter can transfer high-resolution audio, however, you'll need compatible devices and streaming service. The WH-1000XM4s also allows you to connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time and automatically switch between the two when needed. This feature is enabled through the Sony Headphones Connect App and works flawlessly.

The touch panels are more sensitive than the XM3. They respond more quickly to a tap on the panel, and this makes them easier to control during a phone call or to listen to music. Sony also added a feature that helps voices sound clearer and more precise on calls, which is noticeable and a nice addition.

Although the WH-1000XM4s may not be perfect, they're one of the top wireless headphones we've tested. They are comfortable and well-made. They also have an energy-efficient battery that can last for more than 30 continuous hours. They can be used in a passive manner by using an TRS cable. This is ideal for traveling or conserving power.

The WH1000XM4s offer a better alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears Px7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable and their ANC can block out more background noise. The B&Ws have an EQ that is more flexible, as well as a companion app to tweak the audio performance. The B&Ws are more robust and can connect to two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. They also support aptXHD, and they have an AI-driven engine which tries to scale compressed music up to high resolution. This is called DSEE Extreme, and it enhances the clarity of music when listening to lossless audio files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 noise-canceling headset is the latest version of a headset that has become a favorite among commuters and passengers all over the world. The new model does not reinvent the wheel. It is based on the same formula which made its predecessor so successful, while adding USB-C and better noise cancellation.

Like the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones feature an elegant design and feel that oozes quality. The headband, constructed of plastic, provides an incredibly solid feel due to the metal hinges at pivot points. They also have the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you retract or extend your earcups. The cups are soft cushions that fit comfortably over the ears and don't apply pressure to your head. When folded they weigh 238 grams. They can be paired with a coat or sweater because they function even when not on your head.

Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones, the QC45s do not offer the best on-ear headphones wireless sound at this price point. The frequencies are comparatively flat and lack the depth that higher-end headphones may be capable of bringing out. The upper registers are boosted which is acceptable for most music genres but could be a problem for more delicate and complex genres. The bass is good but lacks punch.

One feature that's missing is the possibility of paused playback when you take off the headset. This is standard in this price bracket and is something that Bose's rivals have been offering for years. Another omission is the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose has preset EQs in the app but it would be nice to have an option to control the EQ manually.

You can connect to your tablet or smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 with multipoint support as well as more advanced codecs such as aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust the volume and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s also include four in-built microphones to hear your voice when you make calls. They have excellent call quality, however they don't permit you to muffle the sound during playback as other beats studio3 wireless noise cancelling over ear headphones headphones. Update: A firmware update for the QC45s in February 2022 introduced manual EQ options to the audio app. This is a very welcome change.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio company that makes high-performance headphones. They are known for their comfort and style that let listeners know that they're listening something special. Their first venture into wireless noise cancelling headphones the Bathys are a stunning set of headphones that sound and look great. They come with a high-performance USB DAC built in, so you can use them both for wired and wireless listening.

Focal claims that the Bathys can play Bluetooth music for 30 hours. We actually got more from them with more than 40 hours on average of one charge. If you have to charge the headphones, the indicator light on ear wireless headphones the right earcup will turn red.

For a pair of headphones for this price, they have lots of features. They can connect to multiple devices simultaneously and offer automatic pairing. (You will need to select the device you want to pair with manually every time you listen.) They come with a built-in microphone that works with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones also feature an easy-to-use interface that makes it simple to control your music and take calls.

Bathys over-ear headphones are able to perform in our noise cancellation test, reducing ambient sound by 9 decibels on average. This isn't as impressive a result as the ANC in the Sony WH-1000XM4 or Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless over ear headphones gym, however it's still pretty effective.

The Bathys headphones performed well in our headphone tests. Their frequency response was mostly similar to the headphone curve of SoundGuys, with only minor beats studio3 wireless Noise cancelling over ear headphones deviations in the mids and bass. The Bathys have a bassy sound that can make instruments, vocals and cymbals look a bit veiled.

You can wear them anywhere without fearing that other people will hear your music. Their mic is passable for recording using Bluetooth with only a slight distortion between the mid-treble and treble.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless are a new version of the company's flagship Bluetooth headphones. The Momentum 3 was a solid but not a great entry in this class. The latest pair is an improvement on the previous model, featuring a sleeker look, improved gesture control and a massive battery life.

Many of the improvements aren't that obvious, but they make a pair of over-ears that appear to be an upgrade from the old one. The Momentum 4s are flat and don't fold. They come with an outer case that protects them when traveling. They also follow the trend of a number of other recent Bluetooth headphones, including the ones from Sony and Bowers & Wilkins, to be beautifully device agnostic. They can be used with Apple iPhones as well as Android phones, but lack the AirPods' extra features like Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The most obvious difference in this model is the huge battery that promises up to 60 hours of playback when the noise cancellation feature turned on. That's easily double what most of the competition can offer and enough for a trip of a lifetime without worrying about finding an outlet to charge them.

Engadget senior editor Billy Steele gave the headphones an 82 rating and cited their sound quality and ANC as their main strengths. The only thing he dislikes is that they lack a sense gravitas in the mids as well as treble, meaning that orchestral tracks tend to sound flat instead of grand. The bass is rounded, but it's easy to over-emphasize, which can lead to fatigue in songs with heavy bass lines like the drums that are pounding in As I Lay Dying's Forever. The cymbals sound a bit bubbly, but not full. There's also no real depth to the lows.

The Momentum 4s should not put pressure on your neck or ears. They can be a bit fidgety when you wear them around the home or for long listening sessions. They can move on your head, and make rapid head movements. This can cause them to wake up in a sudden manner, which could be distracting when listening to music or making calls. They stop automatically after 15 minutes, and can be turned off manually using the power button.
