How to replace window panels Glass in Window Repair

Install the new Pane

You can also take two measurements of the height, using a pencil on a piece paper. Again, avoid measuring the trim and focus on the glass window. Be sure to subtract 1/8 inch from both length and width measurements. This will allow for seasonal changes to alter the frame.

Another important measurement is the depth of the rabbet on the frame of the window. This is particularly important in the case of windows that open because the size of the opening can change as you open and close the window. You can also measure this by running a tape measure along the outside of the frame to the inside, at the corners. Add the measurements from each side to get an accurate depth measurement.

Once you have the right measurements, go to your local hardware store and have them cut the glass to size for your new window. Bring a piece old glass with you to make sure that the new one has the same thickness and size.
