Door Handle Replacement

It's worth replacing door handles if you aren't happy with the way they appear, or if they're difficult to use. With some patience, you can put in a new handle in no time.

Most modern door handles have cover plates that hide the screws for an attractive appearance. However, you will need to attach them separately if your new handle doesn't have them attached already.

Remove the handle that was previously used

The door handle isn't only a decorative addition to your home it also serves as an element of security that allows you to lock and unlock the door. But, over time, your door handle may lose its grip, appear loose, or appear old and worn out. This is a sign that it's probably time to replace it.

One of the first signs that your door handle needs replacing is when it becomes difficult to operate. This is a problem because it means that you can no longer lock or double glazed window Handles unlock your door, which could be a security risk for you and your family.

It is also recommended to replace the handle on your door in the event that it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is risky, particularly for elderly or children members who might struggle to open it. They may get trapped. It's a good thing that it's easy to fix a broken door handle by replacing the handle that was broken.

Modern door handles are generally standard sizes and will fit any door. If you're not sure if your new door handle will work, take off the old one and measure its housing holes. This will help you purchase the right size door handle.

It is easiest to remove the old door handle by unscrewing it from the door. Usually you'll need a screwdriver. Then, you can remove the latch from the door's edge.

Removing the Strike Plate

You'll need to replace your latch plate after replacing the handle. This is the plate that holds the hole where the latch of the door hooks when the door is closed. The new handles will have two latch plates which are a circular and a rectangular plate (see the diagram above which shows the various parts of a door handle). If your current latch plate has rectangular in shape, swap it out for the round one so that the latch is able to hook into the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle more comfortable to use.

The first step is to remove the screw that is holding the old latch plate in place. The screws are often quite tight and require a lot of force to loosen them. It is helpful to get a second person to assist in this area if it is possible.

Once the screws are removed and the latch plate should slide out of the door easily. If it's stuck or won't move, use a small nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate up.

You can now move on to making the new door strike plate to be installed. Do not tighten the screws too much because this could damage the strike plate.

If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in the proper position, shut and then open the door to see whether it locks and closes properly. If it does not then you'll need to adjust the strikeplate either up or down or forward or back until the door shuts correctly.

If the door still moves or jiggles, then you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too shallow, the incorrect size of the latch or a damaged strike plate. If this is the situation you can use a metal file instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Remove the Latch

The latch is an angled metal piece which slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into the door frame so that the door is closed. If your door wobbles when you close it, an upgrade to the latch could be the only thing needed to fix the problem.

The screws that hold the door double glazed window handles latch are difficult to locate however, you can insert a screwdriver into an insignificant hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After you've removed the trim plate, it'll be easy to remove the latch as well as the remaining bolts that hold the spindle and latch in place.

If the latch isn't able to come out you can try using a paper clip or a tool to release it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item in the slot for the latch that is recessed, and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the handle and latch begin to break off. You may need to repeat this process several times before you are able to remove the latch.

You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot with no problems after you have removed the old one. Make use of the new screws to secure the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly placed in the slot, aligned with the screw chambers.

Check the backset of the current handle (the distance between the center of the large hole on the front of the door and the edge) before installing the new handle. Also, make sure whether the size of the latch on the new handle is in line with the measurement of your existing handle.

If you are replacing the latch or handle, or if your old lock cylinder is damaged, then you'll need an entirely new one. If you're not changing the locks however, a new latch should fit in your existing recess and will work with the keys you have currently. Make sure you select the latch with rectangular cover plates that match your old handles.

Removing the Cover Plate

The first step in replacing an internal door handle is to remove the cover plate or rose, which hides the screws and the mechanism within. Look for a release tab on the plate and make use of a flathead screwdriver to lift it off the knob. It could have an opening on one edge or be held by a pin.

When the cover plate is off take off the screw that holds the inside handle in place, and then set it aside. You'll also need to remove the screws that hold the latch and the plates inside and the latch plate, which can be done by loosening them using a Philips screwdriver. Take the inner plates and latch from the door. Place them aside.

Most doors have gaps between the door jamb and the inside edge of the frame, which allows for a handle, but not all have. If yours doesn't then you'll have to drill a hole in the door for the new handle. The procedure for this is the same procedure for opening a door with a lock, but you'll have to be extra careful not to damage the door handle replacements or frame.

After the holes are drilled after which you'll have to put in new screws for the door knob. Buy the same size as the old screws to ensure that you don't get a handle too tight or loose. Installing a new latch and strike rod is also required. These are not included in all door handle sets.
