Kidney Cancer Treatments

Researchers began to discover why kidney cancer was so dangerous, which led to the development of new treatments. These include medications that block the blood supply to the cancer (angiogenesis inhibiters).

There are many other new drugs which boost your body's immune system, allowing it to better recognize and destroy kidney tumors. These are referred to as immunotherapy.

Treatment

For some patients, surgery may be curative in the early stages of kidney cancer. A radical nephrectomy might be performed if there is a large tumor has been detected. The surgeon will remove the entire kidney and the surrounding tissue. If the tumor has been able to spread to nearby lymph nodes they will also be removed by a process known as dissection of the lymph nodes. The surgeon can perform a partial nephrectomy on patients with localized, smaller tumors.

If the tumor is at an advanced stage it is possible for doctors to employ other methods to limit its growth and alleviate symptoms. These include drugs that block cell signals, impede the growth of blood vessels for the tumor, and slow or stop the growth of the tumor itself. Examples include tyrosine-kinase inhibition drugs such as axitinib and cabozantinib, pazopanib, sunitinib, Sutent and lenvatinib.

Interleukin-2, a form of immunotherapy, has also been demonstrated by a few to be effective in advanced kidney cancer patients. This is a form of cell cytokine that aids the immune system recognize and fight the cancerous tissue.

Chemotherapy

Cancer drugs can stop tumor cells from growing or kill them. They can be taken through mouth or injecting into a vein or muscle. Some types of chemotherapy are administered in combination with radiation or surgery to increase the likelihood of cure. Other types of chemotherapy are used to treat cancers that have spread (metastasized) or to treat cancers that have already spread to different parts of the body.

Kidney cancer develops as an individual tumor that is located in the kidneys. The kidneys are bean-shaped in the middle, behind the ribs and kidney Cancer on either side of the spine. The kidneys filter the blood and produce urine. This urine is absorbed into the pelvis of the kidneys and leaves the body via tubes called ureters. Cancers that begin in the kidney are called renal cell carcinomas.
