| Where Winds Meet – Game Progression & Skill Guide | xtameem@outlook.jp | 26-03-25 11:25 |
Game Progression and Skill AcquisitionWow, the pace of this game suddenly accelerated in a big way. It seems I paused right at the perfect moment before diving back into Where Winds Meet for this column, because everything just started to heat up. Prior to that shift, I was focused on experimenting with the weapons I had collected. I wanted to test their effectiveness and see if unlocking new gear would add some excitement. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting the story to deliver much excitement on its own. I initially took up the spear, a weapon designed for resilience, with a skill to draw enemy focus and an ability to turn aside blows that typically demand evasion. Perhaps my memory of the fan’s style is already growing unclear, but I felt I was parrying far more than originally intended. This newfound defense proved a mixed blessing. It bolstered my courage to hold the line, yet also fed a careless aggression. Merely holding a block does not sustain it; each strike requires a timely parry. Whether due to my own imperfect timing or the game’s reluctance to spare me from glancing blows, I suspect the fault lies mostly with me, and only partly with the code. Yet, in spite of this struggle, the spear felt right. Its extended range suited me, its combat flow felt weighty and precise, a natural fit for my approach. Satisfied, I sought a second weapon and settled on a pair of swift blades. This choice, in turn, unlocked an entirely new path of optional adventures. In previous gameplay, I picked up various martial arts moves just by watching others. For instance, I discovered how to flip a bear using tai chi techniques. I also got introduced to an attack goose maneuver—though, frustratingly, I still can’t seem to activate that skill. This method of learning through observation reminded me of a Yakuza-style mechanic, which wasn’t unfamiliar to me. However, the idea of stealing skills was something entirely new. It required sneaking into a guarded area to reach a vantage point for skill acquisition. My first attempt at infiltrating the area to obtain the dual blades was manageable. The stealth felt somewhat forced, which I’m not particularly fond of, but it was acceptable. I managed to advance quite a bit until I encountered an impassable group of enemies blocking my path. At that moment, the game redirected me to another skill theft mission. This new objective allowed me to learn the “touch of death” technique, granting the ability to backstab foes. A welcome addition, indeed. Game Progress and ChallengesThe journey felt like a series of puzzles, each with a clear but stubbornly hidden key. Unlocking new skills and weapons offered a satisfying payoff for the persistent effort. Yet the path was littered with distractions—events and passes that felt more like clutter than content. Armed and upgraded, the narrative finally demanded my full attention. A tedious expedition into a hidden temple beneath my own home yielded little but irritation. Then, a sudden shift: pledging to a cause, only to be met by silent assassins and a sorceress who warps reality itself. Without any warning, my peaceful home was suddenly attacked by a group of marauders led by a mysterious woman whose motives remained unclear. Meanwhile, my character and Killer Blade resolved a dispute the only way they knew how—through an intense kung fu battle. Though it sounds chaotic on paper, the fight choreography was genuinely impressive and well-executed. When the story finally allowed me to join the battle, things escalated rapidly. The difficulty spiked sharply as multiple enemy waves overwhelmed me. My attempts to block were inconsistent, and I quickly realized my healing supplies were scarce—something I hadn’t noticed before since I rarely needed to heal. Much like the brutal thrashing I suffered earlier, it was clear that Where Winds Meet was no longer going to go easy on me. And that was just the prelude to facing the boss: the witchy woman. This fight was filled with gimmicks and layered with challenging soulslike combat mechanics, including the dreaded delayed attack animations. Honestly, I despise these slow, telegraphed swings, especially in a game that relies heavily on dodging and parrying. Challenging Boss Fight and StrategyI found myself getting flattened repeatedly, which is somewhat expected in this type of combat, but the real frustration came from having to restart the entire first phase after every single death. The real kicker was a DPS check where the arena itself drained my health, and the only way to recover was by attacking a mirror image of Witchygal that constantly dodged. Using limited health items or entering this phase damaged was basically a death sentence. After countless failures, I finally gave in and summoned another player’s AI-controlled ghost for assistance. By “help,” I mean they completely carried me because they were way too powerful for the fight. Honestly, I didn’t mind—there’s no shame in accepting help when you’re stuck. I’m definitely not the kind of player who can dodge attacks effortlessly like some video game prodigy. Having that overpowered companion made the payoff worth it, as the final cutscenes blew me away. The fight’s choreography was stunning, with genuine emotional weight, and my character now roams as a wandering martial artist badass. Plus, she got a cool, eerie mask, which just adds to the whole vibe! Arriving in Kaifeng, I can’t say for sure if the story will improve, but for the first time, I’m genuinely interested to see where it goes next. Before diving deeper, I made it a point to grab the much-anticipated healing umbrella. This item caught me off guard. Instead of my usual style of floating and throwing daggers, the umbrella acts like a healing companion. It can be deployed as a sort of healbot that works alongside me—wielding its sword cane or switching to my spear attacks while continuously restoring my health. On paper, it sounds ridiculously powerful, but whether it’ll actually keep me alive during chaotic fights is still up in the air. Now, here’s the thing: recent polls have mostly focused on weapon choices, and yes, I’m turning to you all again for input. But this time, I feel like I’ve got some fresh options to consider—more strategies to experiment with. So, what weapons should I commit to for real this time?
I’m eager to see what you think! Choosing the Next FocusOnce again, I'm reaching out with a poll about what to concentrate on next. With a fresh realm opened up, it feels like the perfect moment to revisit this question. There's a chance the story could deepen and become even more engaging. What do you think? Where should my attention be in Kaifeng?
Cast your vote and let's see where this adventure leads! Voting will end at 1:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, March 27th. At this stage, I’m stepping back to watch how the results unfold. Honestly, Winds has caught my interest once more.
