Laryngeal Cancer and the Railroad Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia

Larynx cancers are referred to as squamous cells carcinomas. They are slow-growing and often are not noticed by the patient.

In cohort studies, those who have been exposed to asbestos are at a higher chance to develop this type of cancer. These studies included a wide range of occupational and industrial activities.

Risk Factors

Signs and symptoms

He was an engine mechanic and locomotive mechanic with over 30 years of experience.

Diagnosis

The health professionals can detect laryngeal cancer by an examination of the throat and neck. A doctor will feel for lumps in the neck and throat and will typically use a mirror to get an enlarged view of the throat and larynx.

A medical history will also be taken and the doctor may ask if you've suffered from any health issues. You may need blood tests and an CT scan to determine if the cancer has spread.

The stage of the cancer will tell the health care team how long it has grown, and whether it has spread to the lymph nodes or nearby tissues. The stage of cancer can also aid in deciding which treatment you'll need.

Workers in industries such as locomotive engineering, where they manufacture steel and burns fuel are more likely be affected by laryngeal cancer. People who have been exposed to sulfuric acid mist or wood dust are also more vulnerable.

Treatment

The prognosis for a laryngeal tumor is based on the size the cancer when it's first discovered, its location in larynx, and whether it has spread. It is also dependent on the type and the grade (how abnormal the cancer cells look under a microscope) of the cancer.

The squamous lining of the throat is where the cancer of the larynx usually begins. The early stages of these cancers are unlikely to spread. When the cancer is in the third stage, it might have been able to spread to tissues around the larynx like the thyroid food pipe, or the nearby lymph nodes. It could also have spread to other organs in the body.

There are various types of treatment options for laryngeal carcinoma dependent on the nature and stage. If the cancer is in the early stages, surgery and radiation may be able to treat it.

Laser surgery, or surgery with or without chemotherapy are options for more advanced cancers. Certain patients suffering from laryngeal cancer might benefit from a method of preserving voice called total laryngectomy. This involves the removal of both the voice box and tumor and neck lymph nodes.
