Laryngeal Cancer and the Railroad Kidney Cancer

Squamous cell cancers are cancers of the larynx. They are slow-growing and often are not detected by the patient.

In cohort studies, those who have been exposed to asbestos are at greater risk to develop this type of cancer. These studies covered a broad range industrial activities and occupations.

Risk Factors

Rail workers transport 30 million passengers and 1.6 billion tons of freight every year. They work in harsh conditions which increase the risk of cancer and other diseases. Railroad Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease workers are exposed to a variety of different substances including coal smoke and diesel exhaust. They also use dangerous chemicals to clean the tracks and engines. These exposures increase their risk of developing certain types of cancers, such as laryngeal.

Studies of cohorts and case-control studies consistently reveal increased risk of developing laryngeal cancer as a result of exposure to asbestos. The reason for this is both acute and cumulative exposures. Some evidence suggests that asbestos levels are related to risk. In one study, the risk of exposure to asbestos was greater than the combined risk of alcohol and smoking. Other studies have found similar results, and several have found that the risk of exposure to asbestos is higher for males than women (Jemal et.al. 1998, Muscat & Wynder 1992).

Other factors that can increase the risk of developing laryngeal cancer include alcohol and tobacco consumption. A history of squamous cells cancer of the glottis may also be an indicator of risk. This kind of cancer is difficult to diagnose, as it usually doesn't present any symptoms in the beginning. There are some symptoms and signs you shouldn't ignore and must always be examined by your physician.

Signs and symptoms

Laryngeal cancer happens when cancerous cells develop in the area that helps you breathe, speak and swallow. The larynx is the area located in your throat and is located at the top of your windpipe (trachea). Larynx cancers can start in the supraglottis (where one third of laryngeal cancers start) or in the glottis (where two narrow bands vibrate to produce sound), or in the subglottis (where the majority of laryngeal carcinomas begin).

The most commonly reported symptom of laryngeal cancer is the voice becoming hoarse. It could be caused by a viral infection. However, if your hoarseness has lasted for more than 3 weeks you should see your physician. Other signs include difficulty breathing or speaking, pain when swallowing or coughing. Sometimes, the cancer may expand to the lymph nodes in your neck.

Railroad Colon Cancer workers are at a higher chance of developing laryngeal cancer because they often work with harmful chemicals such as perchloroethylene (PCE) which may irritate the lining of the throat. As well, exposure to asbestos can also increase your risk of laryngeal cancer. Diagnosis

A physical examination of the neck and throat can be used to determine laryngeal cancer. A doctor will check the neck and throat for lumps and use the mirror to observe the larynx and throat.

A medical history will also be taken, and your doctor may inquire if you've had any other health problems. It is possible that you will require blood tests or a CT scan to help determine whether the cancer has spread.

The stage of cancer will inform your health care team whether it has spread to surrounding tissues or lymph glands. The stage of cancer can also aid your team in deciding which treatment you'll need.

Laryngeal carcinoma in its early stages is typically treated with surgery and radiation therapy. The procedure may involve the removal of any or all of larynx. Radiotherapy uses controlled doses to kill cancerous cell. It can also be used in conjunction with chemotherapy.

Alcohol drinkers and smokers are more likely to develop laryngeal cancer than women. It is more likely to affect those who have been exposed to toxic metals like beryllium and nickel while working in industries that manufacture steel or burn fuel, for example, locomotive engineering. People who have been exposed to sulfuric acid mist or Railroad Asthma wood dust are also more vulnerable.

Treatment

The prognosis for laryngeal cancer depends on how large it is when it is discovered, where it is located in the larynx and whether it has spread. It is also dependent on the kind and severity (how abnormal the cancer cells look under the microscope) of the cancer.

Railroad laryngeal cancer usually starts in the squamous cells which are found in the throat. These cancers progress slowly and are unlikely to grow in the early stages. By the time the cancer has reached the third stage, it could have spread to tissues around the larynx such as the thyroid food pipe, the thyroid gland, or nearby lymph nodes. It could have spread to other parts of the.

There are various types of treatment options for laryngeal carcinoma dependent on the nature and Railroad laryngeal cancer stage. If the cancer is in the early stages it is possible to undergo surgery or radiation therapy to be able to treat it.

For cancers that are more advanced, treatment options include laser surgery and surgery with or without chemotherapy. Some patients with laryngeal cancer may benefit from a method of preserving voice known as total laryngectomy. This involves the removal of both the voice box and the cancer along with some neck lymph nodes.

People who smoke or drink alcohol have a higher risk of developing laryngeal cancer. Having an ancestor with cancer increases the chance of being diagnosed with it. A healthy diet that includes vegetables and fruits, will reduce the risk.
