Railroad Workers and Cancer

The railroads are utilized by Americans to transport everything from coal, cars and food. Railway workers are exposed toxic substances that can cause cancer, and puts them at a higher risk of getting sick than other workers.

Asbestos

Diesel Exhaust

When you work on railways, you are exposed to diesel exhaust fumes for the duration of the day. These diesel fuel emissions are a primary component of air pollution caused by traffic and have been shown to trigger chronic respiratory illnesses such as COPD and lung cancer in chronic exposure cases. In fact, a study from 2006 published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that railroad workers who were employed as conductors or engineers and were long-term diesel-exposed had a higher risk of death from chronic respiratory illness regardless of smoking.

Diesel engines are the power source for locomotives, trucks, buses as well as farm and construction Equipment Operators railroad cancer generators, ships and a few cars. Silica Dust

Inhaling crystalline dust could cause the lung disease silicosis. It happens when the dust gets stuck in the lungs and causes inflammation and scarring. Studies have shown an association between exposure to silica in the workplace and lung cancer. The research suggests that the risk of developing lung cancer rises with increasing exposure to silica. This link cannot be explained by a difference in methodology or by excluding confounding factors such as smoking. Research suggests that a significant proportion of non-silicotic people are at an increased risk of developing lung cancer. This may be due to genetic factors that cause people to lung cancer.

Wood Dust

Wood dust can cause respiratory irritation to those who work with woodworking equipment like drills, saws and chisels. Wood dust can also be found in the workplace as a result of sanding and woodworking. There is strong evidence from cases and cohort studies of an increased risk for cancer of the sinonasal region due to exposure to wood dust. However, the majority of these cases did not specify histology and many did not report any dose-response correlation. A few studies have also identified an increased risk smoking cigarettes (see Table 2.1).

The results of nine case-control studies that were conducted in communities reviewed in the prior IARC Monograph on this subject show a consistent and significant excess risk for sinonasal cancer from exposure to wood dust. The majority of studies examined adenocarcinoma, but three of the nine showed an increase in squamous cells cancer as well. In addition, the a few studies that have focused on molecular changes in sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma have shown the hypermethylation of the promoter p14ARF in squamous cells of the sinuses in patients who have long-term exposure to wood dust.

Railroad workers are exposed to wood dust in a variety of ways, including through gardening or using chemicals to eliminate weeds near railroad tracks.
