What We Do

When most people think of railroads, they imagine old steam locomotives chugging across endless tracks. Modern railway networks are more efficient than ever before and technologically advanced.

Our Histories

The BNSF network covers 28 states and two Canadian Provinces. It's nearly twice the size of the next largest Class I railroad. BNSF has trackage rights throughout the United States and Canada on many competitors' main lines through leases, mileage equivalents and other arrangements.

The history of the Class I railroad began with the merger of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad as well as the Northern Pacific Railway, and the Santa Fe Railway. BNSF was created in the 1970s, when a number of railroads merged including the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad.

In 1995, Union Pacific merged with Southern Pacific (SP) -creating the largest of the seven North American railroad systems. The merger expanded the reach of BNSF, and gave it an advantage in transporting freight. However, the merger could also result in the possibility of a railroad monopoly in the Western Canadian region.

In an attempt to prevent monopolies, BNSF and UP agreed to swap ownership of trackage rights. The employees are working across the company to ensure the safety of employees as well as that they have a well-rounded and well-rounded career path. Jill Mulligan, executive vice president of the company, has founded WN (Women's Network) which is a network that provides career-enhancing opportunities such as networking and mentoring. She has also created smaller chapters referred to as Women En Route, which provide similar training for WN members and allow members to interact with executives.

Omar Shakoor, BNSF Sales Manager, has spent the past 30 years building relationships with industrial product clients and forming the team. He joined BNSF in 2012 as a part of the EFLS Program, after six years in the Army. His experiences in the military assisted him in his transition into a new workforce.

BNSF launched its Train Transportation Time Prediction Tool in 2021 to provide more accurate information about when a shipment will arrive at the destination. Our Future

The railroad invests billions of dollars to maintain and upgrade its standards, increase its reliability, and increase its capacity. The record investment will be used to repair and replace track infrastructure such as ballast and rail ties and also to improve efficiency across the network.

This includes repainting, resurfacing and doubling track in numerous areas. Two bridges will also be upgraded to take on heavier loads and more frequent freight traffic. BNSF is also looking at ways to reduce emissions from its locomotive fleet with the recent test of a battery electric locomotive which reduces fuel consumption and produces less nitrogen oxides, smaller particulates and greenhouse gases.

BNSF operates more than 24,000 miles of mainline tracks which is operated and owned by the company itself. In addition, the railway holds trackage rights on 8,000 miles in competitors tracks across North America, giving it access to the world's biggest freight markets.
