Garry Giddens, who worked for KCS in 1990 was injured when a track assembly fell upon his hand. He suffered fractures of the type of crush and required several surgeries. He was never able to return to work and was sued by KCS for violating the Federal Employers Liability Act.

Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos, a hazardous mineral is broken into tiny pieces. The fibers can be breathed in and then become airborne. The asbestos can then irritate and damage lung tissue which can lead to respiratory diseases such as asbestosis. It could also cause mesothelioma which is a rare cancer that affects the linings of the abdomen and lungs (peritoneum).

Workers who work with asbestos or manage it frequently experience respiratory issues, such as wheezing and breath shortness. They may also develop pleural plaques, which is a buildup of thickening calcified on the lung's pleural membrane. It may also cause the condition known as pleural effusion. It is a fluid buildup in the area surrounding the lungs.

According to the Mesothelioma justice network, exposure to asbestos may lead to four different types cancers as well as a variety of pulmonary ailments. Asbestosis can cause inflammation and scarring of the alveoli within the lungs, where oxygen gets exchanged with carbon dioxide. It can lead to Kansas City Southern Railway Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia bronchitis and emphysema.

Pleural plaques may develop in those who have been exposed asbestos. This is a condition that manifests when fibrosis increases the thickness of the lung. This can lead to a variety of respiratory symptoms including frequent coughing and difficulty breathing. Pleurisy can be caused by exposure to asbestos. This is a painful inflammation of the pleural membrane. It could take anywhere from 10 to 70 years for asbestos-related ailments to develop, and can be life-threatening.

Diesel Exhaust

Inhalation is one of the most harmful industrial exposures. Regular exposure to diesel fumes can cause long-term lung issues and industrial cancers. Railroad employees and other industrial workers who are exposed to industrial toxics such as solvents, fuels, silica, welding fumes and creosote are usually at risk of developing serious health conditions that could have catastrophic consequences.

In laboratory tests Diesel exhaust can trigger mutations in DNA. Inhalation diesel exhaust can also cause irritation to the nose, throat and respiratory tract. It can also aggravate asthma. Excessive exposure to diesel exhaust can cause cancers in the kansas city southern railway stomach cancer, larynx and pancreas.

Exhaust fumes from diesel can be found in any occupation which involves working in or around diesel powered vehicles and equipment. This includes railroad yard crews who work close with locomotives, freight cars and other train equipment warehouse workers; ferry/bus/train drivers and passengers; taxi and forklift drivers; airline ground staff; vehicle repair workers; garages; and other occupations where diesel vehicles are stored or operated such as police and fire stations.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is composed of carbon particles (kansas city southern railway black lung disease carbon, also referred to as soot), ash particulates, kansas city southern railway chronic lymphocytic leukemia polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, metallic abrasion particles and sulfates, the majority of which are in the size range of respirable, less than 10 microns. The DPM can also contain gaseous pollutants such as volatile organic compounds and oxides of nitrogen. Several studies have shown that there is a relationship between exposure and response between DPM and lung kansas city southern railway blood cancer in human subjects. In fact an analysis of a meta-analysis of epidemiological research has determined that occupational exposure to DPM over a 45 year career would be associated with 17 excess cases of lung cancer per 10,000 exposed persons.

Smoking

Smoking cigarettes is a recognized risk factor for laryngeal SCC (squamous-cell carcinoma). It is believed to represent as much as 70 percent of all laryngeal SCCs. The present study was designed to determine the risk of laryngeal squamous carcinoma (SCC) associated with cigarette smoking. To obtain information on the consumption of alcohol and smoking 50 patients in the experimental group and 50 control subjects with a similar age and sex aswell as the location of residence for the control group were recruited. The risk of laryngeal sccc related to past and current smoking cigarettes, as well as duration of tobacco use was determined using a variety of methods. Cessation of smoking was found to decrease the risk of SCC laryngeal in a significant manner.

The increased risk of laryngeal cancers with smoking a lot of cigarettes was found to be strongly correlated with the length of time and amount of smoking as measured in pack years. The increased risk was greater when smoking at a younger age. The evidence suggests that smoking cigarettes at an early age triggers molecular changes that increase susceptibility to carcinogenic effects. This leads to the formation DNA adducts.

Railroad workers are often exposed to industrial chemicals that are toxic, including diesel exhaust. If you've been diagnosed with a serious illness due to exposure to work, the railroad company may be responsible for compensation under the Federal Employers Liability Act.
