Laryngeal Cancer and Cigarette Smoking

Garry Giddens, who worked for KCS in 1990 was injured when a track assembly fell upon his hand. He suffered fractures of the type of crush and required several surgeries. He was never able to return to work and was sued by KCS for violating the Federal Employers Liability Act.

Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos, a hazardous mineral is broken into tiny pieces. The fibers can be breathed in and then become airborne. The asbestos can then irritate and damage lung tissue which can lead to respiratory diseases such as asbestosis. It could also cause mesothelioma which is a rare cancer that affects the linings of the abdomen and lungs (peritoneum).

Workers who work with asbestos or manage it frequently experience respiratory issues, such as wheezing and breath shortness. They may also develop pleural plaques, which is a buildup of thickening calcified on the lung's pleural membrane. It may also cause the condition known as pleural effusion. It is a fluid buildup in the area surrounding the lungs.

According to the Mesothelioma justice network, exposure to asbestos may lead to four different types cancers as well as a variety of pulmonary ailments. Asbestosis can cause inflammation and scarring of the alveoli within the lungs, where oxygen gets exchanged with carbon dioxide. Railroad employees and other industrial workers who are exposed to industrial toxics such as solvents, fuels, silica, welding fumes and creosote are usually at risk of developing serious health conditions that could have catastrophic consequences.

In laboratory tests Diesel exhaust can trigger mutations in DNA. Inhalation diesel exhaust can also cause irritation to the nose, throat and respiratory tract. It can also aggravate asthma. Excessive exposure to diesel exhaust can cause cancers in the kansas city southern railway stomach cancer, larynx and pancreas.

Exhaust fumes from diesel can be found in any occupation which involves working in or around diesel powered vehicles and equipment. This includes railroad yard crews who work close with locomotives, freight cars and other train equipment warehouse workers; ferry/bus/train drivers and passengers; taxi and forklift drivers; airline ground staff; vehicle repair workers; garages; and other occupations where diesel vehicles are stored or operated such as police and fire stations.

The present study was designed to determine the risk of laryngeal squamous carcinoma (SCC) associated with cigarette smoking. To obtain information on the consumption of alcohol and smoking 50 patients in the experimental group and 50 control subjects with a similar age and sex aswell as the location of residence for the control group were recruited. The risk of laryngeal sccc related to past and current smoking cigarettes, as well as duration of tobacco use was determined using a variety of methods. Cessation of smoking was found to decrease the risk of SCC laryngeal in a significant manner.

The increased risk of laryngeal cancers with smoking a lot of cigarettes was found to be strongly correlated with the length of time and amount of smoking as measured in pack years. The increased risk was greater when smoking at a younger age. The evidence suggests that smoking cigarettes at an early age triggers molecular changes that increase susceptibility to carcinogenic effects. This leads to the formation DNA adducts.

Railroad workers are often exposed to industrial chemicals that are toxic, including diesel exhaust. Two associate professors have been granted five-year NIH grants for their studies on neck and head cancer.
