Treatment

There are many options for treatment for lymphoma. These include chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The majority of chemotherapy procedures are performed in the clinic. However some patients might require overnight stays in a hospital. Radiation therapy is a painless procedure which targets cancerous cells in the body with high-energy radiation. The majority of types of radiation therapy just require a few physician visits over the course of months or weeks.

Recent advances in the treatment of lymphoma have increased the armamentarium of available drugs and brought about a variety of challenges. The need for more precise sequencing of therapies is becoming more pressing, but current prognostic tools are only available upon diagnosis, and predictive biomarkers that would aid in the selection of therapy at relapse remain elusive.

Duvelisib monotherapy was recently proven to be an effective treatment for patients suffering from relapsed or refractory peripheral T-cell lymphoma in the phase III SCHOLAR study, which included a total of 446 patients. Each contributing group abstracted patient-level data by using criteria defined in the research proposal and, in some cases, by a standardized, cancer investigator-developed data entry form; this was then submitted to a central database for a pooled analysis by Kite Pharma.

Prognosis

Researchers are now experimenting with new therapies that target specific regions of lymphoma. They also modify the immune system to help the body fight the disease. This exciting era of basic science discoveries could bring improved outcomes to a greater number of patients. Researchers are working on CAR-T-cell therapy as a treatment option for early signs of cancer before the patient exhausts all other options, and may need an organ donation. Early results from the initial trial of this treatment which relies on the patient's own immune cells to eliminate the cancer as well as improve survival that is not affected by events.
