The Terry Fox Translational Research Program Accelerates the Development of New Treatments and Technologies for Children With Blood Cancer

The CYP-C surveillance system is fully funded by PHAC through the C17 Council (canadian pacific stomach cancer Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario). CYP-C data are provided by participating sites: Alberta Children's Hospital, Allan Blair Cancer Centre, British Columbia Children's Hospital, CancerCare Manitoba, Izaak Walton Killam Health and Rehabilitation Centre and the Hospital for Sick Kids.

Treatment

The development and testing of new treatments for blood cancer patients requires a collaborative effort. It takes investigators, governments, payers and most importantly patients who are part of research studies. It is also a requirement that we are willing to think beyond what we know and to explore new possibilities.

We are determined to stay at the leading edge of our field, and have implemented numerous cutting-edge research projects. For instance our clinical development of a revolutionary method of treating leukemia, a blood-borne cancer using the patient's own cells and reprogram to recognize and combat the disease, Canadian pacific cll is taking us in a completely different direction.

The results of our research are significant for our patients. We have seen that the overall survival rate is increasing with time. Additionally, the risk of relapse within five years after diagnosis is decreasing.

We would like to thank family members, patients and doctors who have provided generously information to support this surveillance. This information contributes to reducing the burden of childhood cancer in Canada. We also acknowledge the work of the provincial and territorial cancer registers and Statistics Canada in providing the canadian pacific lung cancer Cancer Registry (CCR) information. The study was funded jointly by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the C17 Council.

Research

The Terry Fox Translational Research Program is an pan-Canadian pacific scleroderma program that supports projects that accelerate the development and testing of new treatments and technology for patients suffering from blood cancer. These projects are intended to test or develop new methods for early diagnosis and treatment, as in addition to improve outcomes for children suffering from cancer.

The CYP C surveillance system is financed and managed by PHAC and a consortium of 17 pediatric oncology centres: railways Alberta Children's Hospital (ACH), Allan Blair Cancer Centre (ABC), British Columbia Children's Hospital (BCCH), Canadian Pacific Scleroderma CancerCare Manitoba (CCM) Izaak-Walton Kilam Health Sciences Centres, Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centres (ACH), Kingston General Hospitals McMaster University and Montreal Children's Hospital. Each of the contributing centres collected case-level data on all children diagnosed as having childhood cancer, using the same data entry form. The data was submitted to the central Kite Pharma database.

Jacquie Bakker, PhD, is studying a new treatment for orthostatic hypertension (OH) which causes blood pressure to plummet immediately after an individual stands, leading to nausea and lightheadedness. OH is the most frequent cause of fainting among adults and is life-threatening.

Support

To empower families and patients affected by myeloma through involvement in the community, awareness building advocacy, and the creation of a empowered myeloma-affected community, and to help support clinical research for finding a cure.

To ensure a stable supply of blood and other blood-derived products for all Canadians through national collaboration, collaborative research, education, and empowerment community programs.

Organises blood drives, and provides financial assistance for children suffering from cancer. Also, it offers a SuperSibs program for siblings that helps comfort, canadian pacific leukemia encourage and enable siblings of childhood cancer patients.

Information and referrals are offered to all health and human service providers in Canada. Also, they have the ability to search a database of community resources. Also has a hotline which matches people with the right support in their region. Children suffering from life-threatening illnesses can get their wishes fulfilled to give them strength, hope and joy.
