The Kansas City Southern Railway

With a line that extends across the northern United States and into Mexico, KCS is the first single-line railroad to connect three of North America's countries. However, it wasn't always this way.

The Kansas City Southern Railway was established in 1887 by Arthur E. Stilwell.

History

In 1887, Arthur E. Stilwell and Edward L. Martin incorporated kansas city southern railway leukemia City Suburban Belt Railroad. The KCSR's origins date back to 1887 when Arthur Stilwell and Edward L. Martin incorporated the Kansas City Suburban Belt Railway which served suburban as well as riverside commercial and industrial districts in downtown Kansas City. A railroad entrepreneur, Stilwell also built lines between New Orleans and Shreveport.

In the mid-1990s, a string of major rail mergers posed a threat to KCSR's viability. However, the CEO Michael Haverty reaffirmed Stilwell's vision and began pushing the company into Mexico. The move was aided by the 1994 formation of NAFTA and subsequent changes to North American shipping patterns.

KCS shareholders voted to approve the purchase of the railroad by Canadian Pacific (CP) in 2021. The deal was completed in April 2023. The two railroads merged to form CPKC, with 7,300 miles of KCS tracks and 15,000 miles of CP lines forming a single north/south freight corridor across the continent. The merger is the largest railroad merger in history. The headquarters of CPKC is located in kansas city southern railway myelodysplastic syndrome City. The KCSR is a large company with many branches. The KCSR has a variety of branches. William Deramus took over the direction of the KCSR after Harvey Couch's passing in 1941. Deramus led the KCSR to invest millions in improvements throughout the 1950s. This included the laying of new ties to ensure faster and more efficient operations as well as upgrading to Centralized Traffic Control in 1943 before dieselizing in 1953, and opening the huge Deramus Yard at Shreveport in 1956.

Today, KCSR is owned by Canadian Pacific Railway Limited. The Surface Transportation Board (STB) has approved the merger, subject to certain conditions. While the deal is in process, KCSR will operate as it does today.

The Holiday Express is pulled by KCSR's F units, which are prized catch trains. The train raises money for the Salvation Army by visiting communities across the KCSR U.S. Network. The event was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, however, vaccinations are currently on the way and it's possible that the Holiday Express will return next year.

Employees

KSCS is an American Class I railroad, established in 1887. It operates in 10 states in the midwestern and southeastern regions which include Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana. It hauls freight for seven important sectors of the business and government, including agriculture and minerals military, automotive, chemical and petroleum, industrial, energy and consumer products.

In September 2004, Marcus Lee, an African-American engineer with KCS was fired when the engineer failed to obey a signal in a Shreveport railyard, and therefore did not stop his train. Lee also filed a lawsuit against KCS, alleging that he was discriminated against on the basis of race, and in violation of 42 U.S.C. 1981, and retaliated against him for his filing of EEOC complaints against the company.

This collection includes correspondence and newspaper clippings that document the negotiations between KCS management representatives and their union reps on wage schedule changes. The pamphlets and correspondence are heavily annotated in order to illustrate how the proposed changes will affect the wages of union members. This is one the earliest collections of documents about the labor-management relationships at major railroads.
