Kidney Cancer and the Camp Lejeune Contamination

Veterans groups and former military personnel were enraged when the drinking water found at Camp Lejeune turned out to be contaminated by harmful chemical poisons. Many public health agencies then conducted various studies and research to determine the long-term effects of the water contaminated with toxins. Many communities have discovered their drinking water contaminated with PFAS.

Military Bases

There are hundreds of military bases throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries contain units of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. Much like a town or city they house troops and their families and carry out maintenance, administrative, and supply functions. In the past military leaders have used dangerous chemicals on these bases to test vehicles and weapons. For instance, at Fort Ord in California, the military poured solvents down the base's drains and discharged toxic sludge into underground tanks. They also contaminated off-base water supply with polyfluoroalkyl or perfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, which are known to increase the risk of some cancers.

Despite the health risks, DoD officials have largely ignored requests to cleanse these sites of pollution. The toxins are now present in drinking water and can persist for years. Consequently, many veterans who were employed at the base have been diagnosed with diseases related to exposure to PFAS, including kidney cancer. In recent years, lawmakers have introduced bills that would compensate veterans who were sickened by the toxins.
