Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation

The Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation is dedicated to supporting patients and families who suffer from aplastic anemia and myelodysplastic Syndrome, as well as paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. The Foundation also conducts research on bone marrow dysfunction disease and related conditions.

Causes

Aplastic anemia is a result of damage to the blood stem cells which are responsible for producing blood-forming cells. (Red blood cells, White blood cells, and Platelets). The bone marrow is not able to produce enough healthy cells. This condition is very serious and can be life-threatening.

Aplastic anemia can be caused by chemotherapy and radiation treatments that treat cancer. These treatments harm stem cells within the bone marrow. This type of anemia generally improves once treatment is complete.

This condition is often caused by exposure to diesel exhaust. The toxins present in diesel exhaust can cause respiratory problems, blood disorders and other health issues for railroad employees.

These medicines, such as colony stimulating factors (sargramostim or leucovorin), can stimulate your bone marrow and prevent anemia. These medications are commonly utilized with immune suppressing medications such as cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune) and Canadian National Railway Emphysema anti-thymocyte globulin. Avoiding herbicides and insecticides along with organic solvents paint removal products and other toxic chemicals can reduce the risk of autoimmune-related anemia. Antibiotics to prevent infections can also reduce the risk. If you develop an infection, your doctor may recommend high doses of corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone, SoluMedrol or Medrol.

Diagnosis

Typically, a doctor will diagnose this condition in light of the history of your family and medical history along with physical examination and tests results. If he suspects that you have this condition you may be referred to a specialist, known as a Hematologist. He will assess the severity of the condition and what is the reason for it.

A hematologist conducts a series of tests to determine if there are any abnormalities in your blood cells and bone. These include a complete blood count (CBC) which evaluates your white and red blood cell counts. The test also assesses your hemoglobin levels and hemoglobin levels and hematocrit. These are iron-rich proteins that supply oxygen to your body's cells. Anemia can be identified by having a low hematocrit.

The CBC can tell you if have an immune system that is healthy. It also can detect enlarged lymph nodes that are a sign of specific types of cancer. Hematologists will also examine your liver and spleen to detect indications of liver infection or disease.

A hematologist could also suggest a bone-marrow biopsy or aspiration in addition to these tests. In this test an instrument is used to extract bone marrow fluid and checks it under a microscope to detect defective blood cells. A hematologist can also perform an operation to transplant bone marrow in the event that your condition can't be treated with medication.

Treatment

Diesel exhaust has been linked with anemia aplastic, and train drivers and other railroad workers are at risk. Aplastic anemia may be caused by benzene, which is a chemical found in petroleum-based products like solvents, paint thinners, degreasers, lubricants and other cleaners.
