What is CLL?

What is the best way to diagnose CLL?

CLL is often detected by blood tests that are being done for other reasons. It is not uncommon for patients to be unaffected but have the disease discovered incidentally. However, it is also possible to identify the disease before symptoms begin to manifest by molecular or genetic tests.

Doctors can use genetic and molecular tests to determine the rate of cancer's progression and how effective the treatment will be. The tests can be carried out on a sample of cells taken from the blood or bone marrow or on the chromosomes in those cells.

A genetic test known as immunophenotyping can be used to detect certain characteristics of cancer cells. In this test, a small amount of cells is put through an instrument that can detect the specific surface features on each cell. If the cells have the feature, they will light up on a screen when they are viewed under microscope. This will aid the doctor in determining the kind of leukemia and the stage.

In some cases the diagnostic imaging test can be used to pinpoint the leukemia. A computed tomography (CT) scan will reveal whether the leukemia is present in lymph nodes in the abdomen, chest or pelvis. It is crucial to understand that a person's risk of getting this type of leukemia can increase with long-term exposure to herbicides. Railroad workers who are exposed to herbicides like 2,4-D and paraquat face a higher chance of developing CLL.
