Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation

The Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation is dedicated to supporting patients and families with aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndrome and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. The Foundation also conducts research on bone marrow dysfunction disease and other related conditions.

Diesel exhaust is a common exposure for CN railroad employees working around locomotives or other railway equipment. This exposure can cause occupational lung diseases as well as blood disorders.

Causes

Aplastic anemia results from damage to the blood stem cells that are responsible for the production of blood-forming cells. (Red blood cells White blood cells and Platelets). The bone marrow is not able to produce enough healthy cells. This can be very dangerous and could even be life-threatening.

The use of chemotherapy and radiation to treat cancer could cause aplastic anemia due to the damage to stem cells in bone marrow. This kind of aplastic anemia usually improves after these treatments have been completed.

This condition is often caused due to exposure to diesel exhaust. The toxins present in diesel exhaust can lead to respiratory problems, blood disorders and other health problems for railroad employees.

These medications, including colony stimulating factors (sargramostim or leucovorin), can stimulate your bone marrow, and can prevent anemia. These drugs are often employed in conjunction with immune-suppressing medicines such as cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune) and anti-thymocyte globulin. Avoiding insecticides and herbicides along with organic solvents paint removal products and other toxic chemicals can lower the risk of autoimmune-related anemia. Taking antibiotics to avoid infections can also lower your risk. If you are infected, your doctor might prescribe high doses of corticosteroids like methylprednisolone (Medrol, Solu-Medrol).

Diagnosis
