The Kansas City Southern Railway Company and Panama Canal Railway Company

Upon receiving STB approval, CP-KCS will offer significant new options for transportation to its customers. These include new north-south routes that will facilitate trade between Canada and the United States and Mexico, as well as extended reach for short line and regional railroad customers.

KCS is committed annually to a limited amount political action that promotes corporate participation in the states and communities in which we operate. The company contributes through its state rail PACs, as well as local community service organizations.

Locations

The Kansas City Southern Railway Company operates in the United States as well as Mexico. In the United States KCS owns a controlling stake in The Kansas City Southern Railroad Company that serves the central and south-central U.S. Kansas City Southern de Mexico S.A. de C.V. is owned by the company and serves the northeastern part of Mexico as well as the ports of Lazaro Cardenas y Tampico. Additionally, KCS owns 50 percent of the Panama Canal Railway Company, offering ocean-to-ocean freight as well as railway service for passengers via the Panama Canal.

History

The Kansas City Southern lines were not among the pioneer railroads that opened vast regions of the Midwest to settlement. This program resulted in the rebuilding of nearly all of the system, the rolling of 127-pound rail on most of the track and the straightening up of bends and grade reductions, the expansion of yards and tracks for passing and the construction of new Terminal Facilities at Pittsburg, Kansas and Deramus Yard, Shreveport in Louisiana and the strengthening of bridges.

KCS also placed a top priority on the cleanliness of its facilities in order to increase the safety of both employees and customers. The railway was known for its meticulousness and attention to detail which earned it the reputation of reliability and dependability.

In addition to the aforementioned safety efforts, KCS also participates in a number of trade associations and industry associations. KCS does not allow membership dues to be used to fund political campaigns.

On November 5, 2021 the Board of Directors of CP & KCS announced that they had reached an agreement on the merger of the two railroads. The cash-and-stock deal is valued at $33.7 Billion. The merger will create the leading railway of the 21st century, by seamless connecting rails and ports in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Routes

The final spike was driven on September 11 in 1897, and brought the service through from Kansas City Southern Railway Lung Cancer City to Port Arthur and Beaumont in Texas. The position of Kansas City in United States as the major grain market was boosted by the shorter route to the tidewater. The railroad also started operating "Southern Belle" passenger trains between Kansas City and Shreveport on more efficient schedules.

The railroad was among the first to replace steam freight locomotives with diesel engines, and in the year 1951 it was the first railroad in the world to operate all of its lines using diesel power. The company also encourages responsible corporate citizenship in the states and communities in which it is based. This includes donating limited corporate funds via its state rail PACs as well as local political action groups related to community service organizations in which the Company is an active member, and on occasion direct contributions to local ballot question campaigns. These efforts are managed by the Administration and Corporate Affairs Department and are reported to the CEO. Contributions are only made to promote the interests of the Company and the communities it serves, without regard to personal political views or the interests of company management.

The proposal of CN to acquire KCS would result in the creation of the first railway network that connects the U.S.A., Canada, and Mexico. This will profit from the anticipated growth in trade between these three countries in North America. The single-network service for transport that will result will offer significant cost and service advantages for customers, thanks to increased efficiency of operations, increased market access and enhanced competitiveness. The anticipated truck diversion will also reduce traffic congestion and stop thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide every day from entering the atmosphere.
