The Terry Fox Translational Research Program Accelerates the Development of New Treatments and Technologies for Children With Blood Cancer

The CYP-C surveillance system is fully funded by PHAC through the C17 Council (canadian pacific Lung cancer Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario). CYP C information is provided by participating hospitals, including Alberta Children's Hospital (ACH), Allan Blair Cancer Centre (BC Children's Hospital), CancerCare Manitoba, Izaak Walton Killam Health and Rehabilitation Centre and Hospital for Sick Kids.

Treatment

Creating and testing new treatments for patients with blood cancers requires a team effort. It involves government officials, investigators as well as payers and patients who are involved in research studies. It is also a requirement that we are willing to think beyond what we know and to open our minds to new possibilities.

We are committed to staying at the top of the game and have several innovative projects in the works. For instance our research into a novel method to treat a blood cancer called leukemia, where we use the patient's own cells and reprogram them to recognize and fight the canadian pacific chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is taking us in a completely different direction.

The results of this study have made a huge difference for our patients. We have observed that the overall survival rate is increasing with time. The chance of relapse occurring within five years following diagnosis is also decreasing.

We would like to thank the families, patients, and doctors who have provided us with information to this surveillance. This information aids in reducing the burden of childhood carcinoma in Canada. We also acknowledge the contribution of the provincial and territorial cancer registries and Statistics Canada in providing the canadian pacific leukemia Cancer Registry (CCR) data. The study was funded jointly by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the C17 Council.

Research

The Terry Fox Translational Research Program supports pan-canadian pacific asthma projects that accelerate the development of new treatments and technologies for blood cancer patients. These projects are designed to develop or test novel approaches for early detection and treatment, as well as improving outcomes for children who have cancer.

The CYP C surveillance system is funded and managed by PHAC and a consortium of 17 pediatric cancer centers: Alberta Children's Hospital (ACH), Allan Blair Cancer Centre (ABC), canadian pacific Lung Cancer British Columbia Children's Hospital (BCCH), CancerCare Manitoba (CCM) Izaak-Walton Killam Health Sciences Centres, Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centres as well as Kingston General Hospitals McMaster University and Montreal Children's Hospital. Each contributing centre collected the data for each child diagnosed with cancer in childhood using a standard data entry form. The information was submitted to the central Kite Pharma database.

Jacquie Baker PhD is studying a novel treatment for orthostatic hypotension (OH) which is an illness that causes blood pressure to fall when a patient sits up, causing lightheadedness nausea, dizziness and lightheadedness. OH is a common cause of fainting among adults. It can be life-threatening.

Support

To assist patients and their families affected by myeloma, through participation in the community, awareness-building advocacy, and the creation of an empowered myeloma community and to support clinical research for finding a cure.

To ensure a reliable supply of blood and products derived from blood for all Canadians through national, collaborative research education, empowerment, and community programs.

Organises blood drives, and Canadian Pacific Lung Cancer provides financial aid for children who are diagnosed with cancer. Also, Canadian Pacific Scleroderma it offers a SuperSibs program for siblings that helps comfort, encourage and encourage siblings of children with cancer.

Provides information and referrals for human and health services throughout Canada. Also provides a searchable database of community resources. Also has a hotline that matches people with the right support in their region. Children with life-threatening illnesses can have their wishes granted to give them hope, strength and joy.
