Kidney Cancer and the Railroad

Rail workers are often exposed to toxic substances such as diesel exhaust, welding fumes and asbestos for a prolonged period of time. These carcinogens may increase the risk of kidney cancer, as well as other serious diseases.

Kidney Cancer

Other cancers that have been linked to railway work include mesothelioma, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood cancers. A lot of these cancers result as a result of long term exposure to diesel fumes and second-hand smoke, as well as exposure to welding fumes, asbestos, creosote, silica and other carcinogens.

Urothelial Cancer

The kidney's lining or the tube connecting the kidney and the bladder (ureter) can be affected by cancer. Railroad workers should undergo regular health screenings. This can help doctors detect the indications and symptoms of cancers, like lymphoma or kidney cancer, and offer the most effective treatment for the disease.

Treatment

Based on the type of cancerous cell and stage of kidney cancer, treatment options include radiation, chemotherapy or surgery. Chemotherapy drugs destroy cancerous cells or stop their growth, and they are usually administered by mouth or into a vein. Radiation therapy utilizes high-energy X-rays to kill cancerous cells and shrink tumors and it may be used for both early stage and advanced cancer.
