The Spirit of Ecstasy

Since more than a century, the Spirit of Ecstasy is a popular Rolls-Royce emblem. The background of the hood ornament is just as amazing as the automobiles it decorates. The hood ornament represents a long-standing partnership between two masters of fine craftsmanship, a world-famous jeweler and a revered manufacturer of high-end goods. This piece honors the legendary history of both brands and their attention to detail.

The story begins with John Walter Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 2nd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, who commissioned sculptor Charles Robinson Sykes to create a mascot for his 1909 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost radiator. Eleanor Velasco Thornton, his lover and secretary was the model he wanted. The first figurine showed her in flowing clothes with her forefinger on her lips, as a symbol of their sexy relationship. It was named "The Whisper." The figure is currently on display at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu.

The original Spirit of Ecstasy was made of silver, but was later replaced with a chrome-plated or nickel version to stop theft. In recent years the hood ornament is available in a variety of materials, The KeyLab including stainless steel and 24-carat gold, as well as illuminated crystals with frosted luster. Rolls-Royce has also updated its female model for its upcoming electric vehicles. The new design features a slimmer stance and one leg in front, which will improve the aerodynamics of the car. The new design will be featured on the Spectre and will then be seen on the future Rolls-Royces such as the Phantom, Ghost Wraith and Dawn.

The Kryptos Collection

Rolls-Royce offers a brand new version of the Wraith that isn't your typical novelty. The Kryptos Collection hides encrypted messages with ciphers throughout the vehicle for owners to decode. The cipher begins with a Morse-code like engraving around the base of the Spirit of Ecstasy, and continues on through illuminated "Kryptos Green" treadplates, as well as a complicated pattern that is embroidered into the headrests. The cipher can also be seen on the dashboard and in the starlight header.

Katrin Lehmann, a bespoke designer at Rolls-Royce, is a fanatic of cryptography puzzles. It's natural for her to be a bit cryptic when designing the Wraith Kryptos. She claims that only two Rolls-Royce employees are aware of the full message, which is hidden within the cyphers of the car. She will not reveal the details of the code but says that it will provide "an insightful conclusion". Owners of 50 cars will be required to provide their guesses using the Rolls-Royce private app. There doesn't seem to be any prize for cracking the secret code.

The Keylab Kryptos collection features a custom exterior Delphic Grey with hidden blue and metallic green flakes. The interior features a Kryptos green leather headliner, and a dashboard with the data-stream design. Customers who purchase the car will also receive an exclusive key and medallion that will assist in identifying the clues.

The Ghost's Formula of Serenity

The brand new Rolls-Royce Ghost model is the most technologically advanced of the range of models offered by the marque. The latest technology comes with LED headlights, lasers and LEDs with a greater than 1,900 ft, an intelligent assistant that tracks its surroundings as well as a collision-warning system that detects pedestrians, animals, and vehicles as far as 450 yards away.

The Ghost's quiet interior was also designed to promote peace. When Rolls-Royce engineers started designing the new Ghost they realized that they needed to design the car that could glide around as quietly as an apparition of spectral. To achieve this, Rolls-Royce engineers revamped every component of the vehicle in order to eliminate unwanted sound. The window glass and acoustic panels as well as the driveshaft were all modified to provide an unison experience.
