BNSF Railway Allies With Competitors

BNSF transports goods and commodities that help the world move around. The company is the sole owner and operates more than 24,000 miles of track across 28 states. BNSF holds trackage rights to major lines operated by competitors in North America.

What We Do

The majority of people think of steam locomotives from the past cruising along endless miles of track. Modern railway networks are more efficient than ever and technologically advanced.

One team at BNSF is working behind the scenes to ensure these advancements continue. Its Operations Research and Advanced Analytics Team creates tools to give BNSF leaders the research they need to make decisions regarding everything from train crew schedules to track and equipment maintenance. Their work has already helped BNSF save millions of dollars.

BNSF is the second-largest railroad network in the United States. Its railways cover 3000 miles and span more than 30 states including Canada. The company's fleet of trains transports more than 40 commodities. The company also offers passengers transportation on several lines including the Metra in Chicago and the Sounder in Seattle as well as intermodal services.

Our History

The BNSF network covers 32,000 route miles across 28 states and two Canadian provinces. This is about twice the size of the next largest Class I railroad. The Class I railroad's history began with the merger of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q), the Northern Pacific Railway (NP) and the Santa Fe Railway (SF). In the 1970s, many other railroads merged into what was later BNSF which included the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway (Frisco).

In 1995, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific (SP) made the largest of the seven North American railroad systems. The merger increased BNSF's reach and gave it an advantage when transporting freight. However, the combination could also result in a monopoly in railroad transportation in the Western Canadian region.

In an effort to avoid monopolies, BNSF and UP agreed to transfer ownership of trackage rights. BNSF also gained access to tracks of UP in Oklahoma and Arkansas as well as haulage rights between Houston and East St. Louis, Memphis, and Waxahachie, and a short line linking Waxahachie and Dallas. The BNSF network in Texas and Colorado also was greatly enhanced. Ultimately, the merger sparked an international debate on railroad-labor relations and the consequences of large-scale mergers.

The employees of BNSF are devoted to serving their customers. They are dedicated to providing safe and reliable transport of items that help feed, clothe and support communities across America and around the world. They do it with an infrastructure that can move over 40% of U.S. freight, using significantly less fuel than highways and trucks and emitting fewer emissions.

All across the company, we are working hard to ensure the safety of our employees and make sure they have a secure well-rounded and balanced career path. For example, executive vice president Jill Mulligan founded WN (Women's Network) to support employees and offer opportunities to advance their careers such as mentoring and networking. She's also developed smaller chapters, dubbed "Women En Route" which provide similar opportunities for development to WN members and provide them with the opportunity to meet with executives.

Omar Shakoor, BNSF Sales Manager, has spent the past 30 years building relationships with industrial product customers and building teams. He started with BNSF as part of the EFLS program in 2012 after six years of service in the Army and his military experience has helped ease his transition to a different workforce.

In 2021, BNSF launched the Train Travel Time Prediction tool in order to provide more precise information on when a customer's shipment will arrive at its destination. This is just one of the many tools that BNSF developed to improve their already excellent record of getting freight delivered to customers efficiently and safely.

Our Future

The railroad is investing billions of dollars in its network to improve reliability, increase capacity and ensure its high standards. The record amount of money will be used to repair and replace track infrastructure, such as ballast and rail ties and to increase efficiency across the network.

This includes resurfacing, repainting and doubling track in a variety of areas. Two bridges will be upgraded to handle heavier loads and more frequent freight traffic. BNSF is also looking into ways to reduce emissions from its locomotive fleet by undergoing a recent test of an experimental battery-electric locomotive which reduces fuel consumption and produces less nitrogen oxides, small particles and greenhouse gases.

BNSF manages and owns 24,000 miles (or more) of mainline track. The railway also has rights to trackage for 8,000 miles of competitor's lines in North America. This gives it access to the largest freight markets in the world.
