Stomach cancer is a complication that is a result of the cells that line the innermost part of the stomach. The growth or spread of cancer may affect your prospects of recovery and treatment options.

It's not known what causes stomach cancer, but smoking and smoking, eating salty, and pickled foods increase the risk. A family history of stomach carcinoma or an infection with Helicobacter Pylori may increase your risk.

What is stomach cancer?

Stomach cancer (also called gastric carcinoma) is a cancer of the mucosa, the inner part of your stomach's lining. There are several kinds of stomach cancer. Adenocarcinoma is the most frequent type of stomach cancer. It is a cancer that begins in the glandular tissues of the stomach's inner lining. This kind of cancer develops slowly over many years, and usually causes no symptoms initially. Other types of cancers in the stomach include sarcomas, neuroendocrine tumors, lymphomas and stomach stromal tumors. These types of cancer stomach cancer are less common and generally develop faster and spread to other parts of the body more quickly.

The mucosa (the inner layer of your stomach) is where you can find precancerous changes. Because these early changes rarely produce any symptoms, stomach cancer they are hard to find. You could increase your risk of developing stomach cancer by a number of factors. This includes smoking, H pylori bacterial infections long-term inflammation of your stomach as a result of chronic illness or lifestyle choices and exposure to asbestos.

The stage of your stomach carcinoma will determine the treatment options you have. If the stomach cancer is in the beginning stage, and it is still confined to the stomach lining (stage 1 or limited), you have an 80% likelihood of surviving five years after diagnosis. If the cancer has spread beyond the lining of the stomach to more layers or abdominal organs, the survival rate is reduced to around 5 percent.

Signs and symptoms

Stomach cancer happens when cells in your lining (mucosa) which is the lining of your stomach begin to expand out of control. This usually occurs due to an alteration (mutation) in the DNA code that informs the cell when to expand and then die. In time, these cells take over healthy cells within the stomach lining. They may also expand to other areas of your body.

Most stomach cancers don't display symptoms until they are advanced in. The first symptom is often inexplicably weight loss. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Some people with stomach carcinoma also have blood in their stools or vomit. Others might feel constantly tired.

Other types of stomach tumors are also possible however they're more rare. These include squamous-cell carcinoma, neuroendocrine tumors, leiomyosarcoma, and other malignant stomach tumors.

The stage of your stomach cancer will aid doctors in determining what treatment you'll need. Stage 0 is where the cancer is located on the stomach lining and has not spread to lymph nodes or other parts of the body. There is a possibility of surgery to remove cancer, and an endoscopy (a thin tube equipped with tiny cameras) to look at your stomach. At this stage you could also be treated with chemotherapy or radiation.

Diagnosis

Stomach cancer isn't often discovered early due to the symptoms being vague and similar to those of many other conditions. It takes a long time for stomach cancer to develop and by the time it is diagnosed the cancer may be spreading beyond the stomach's lining.

The first step is to visit your GP (general practitioner) who will inquire about your symptoms and look at your. They will then refer you to a specialist who specializes in digestive issues, generally a gastroenterologist.

You will be subject to blood tests to examine for signs of inflammation within the stomach or for abnormalities that could indicate cancer. Your doctor will also look for a buildup of gas in the abdomen. Additionally, they will ask if you have noticed any enlarged lymph nodes. The doctor will then suggest an abdominal scan.

In an endoscopy, doctors will pass a flexible, long tube with a small camera and a light at the other end of the tube down your throat, oesophagus and into your stomach and duodenum (the first part of the small bowel). They can see the lining of the stomach and may even take a biopsy to test in a lab.

Your doctor may suggest a combination PET/CT scan that produces a set of computer-generated three-dimensional images. It can help determine how active a tumor is and whether it has spread to a different organ.

Treatment

Stomach cancer develops when cells of the lining begin to change and could become a tumor. These changes can be caused through mutations or errors in the genes that regulate the growth and function of cells. Usually these cells multiply too fast to keep pace with normal tissue growth, which leads to the formation of a cancer.

Your care team can use imaging tests to detect the tumor and look for signs that the cancer has been able to spread. These include CT, MRI and PET scans. Cancer that has spread can be detected with surgery.

In the stages 1 to 3 the cancer has spread to the depths of these layers, but it is still limited to the stomach's lining. Your doctor could remove a part or all of your stomach, along with chemotherapy and radiation to kill cancer cells that remain.

Chemotherapy is a treatment for cancer that circulates through your bloodstream. Your doctor could give you chemotherapy through the form of a vein (IV) or as pills. You may also receive a form of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) that is administered immediately following surgery to kill any cancerous microscopic cells that remain in your stomach.
