Railroad Workers and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Diagnosis

COPD is a condition that makes it difficult to breathe. It involves a combination of a chronic cough, the production of phlegm, narrowing of the airways in the lungs, as well as other issues that hinder the flow of air into and out of the lung. Treatment

COPD is a chronic lung disease which causes problems in the lungs' tiniest airways. It causes a decrease in airflow and a constant cough with production of thick mucus. The symptoms can last for weeks or even months, and they can get worse over time. The symptoms include breathlessness, difficulty breathing in cold air wheezing, tightening the chest, and coughing up phlegm which won't disappear.

COPD is primarily due to smoking, but other factors like prolonged exposure to lung irritations such as chemical fumes or industrial dust can cause it. It is essential to seek medical attention if you experience an COPD exacerbation or notice an increase in your symptoms for days or weeks.

Research shows that Railroad Reactive Airway Disease workers who have been exposed to diesel exhaust fumes are more likely develop COPD later in life. This is in contrast to workers who were not exposed. The increase in the likelihood of COPD mortality with age as brakeman or locomotive engineer is apparent even after controlling for smoking and other variables, such as working and home environments and a history of smoking use and the death of a family member.

Prevention

Rail workers are exposed to dangerous fumes which can cause COPD and even worsen it. These dangerous airborne pollutants include diesel exhaust, other contaminants in the workplace like cadmium, silica dust, pesticides, and secondhand smoke. These pollutants can also cause other lung diseases including emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
