Replacement Upvc Window Handles

Almost all replacement upvc window handles come with everything you need to complete the task. However, if the old handle was fitted with screws or pins that were holding it, they are required to be removed. Next remove the'snap in' cover on the handle's base.

Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock system that is fitted to casement windows, such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. They come with a 7mm square spindle that is fitted into the gearbox of the window made of uPVC. The new uPVC window handles that you've ordered should now be able to fit on the cockspur wedge block and then into the spindle of the handle and allow the window glass replacement to open once again. The ideal solution is to replace the wedge block cockspur with a new one whenever you replace your uPVC handle to ensure it is properly secured.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are generally found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle is closed and rotates into a wedge-shaped receiver catch. (Not to be confused with timber latches, which are also covered in this section.) These handles are available in lockable and nonlockable models. They are available in a range of different nose heights to fit the existing frame.

The handle is locked by a small triangle-shaped spur (spur) which is fixed to the frame. These are usually one-way handles, however a locking deadlock can be fitted to provide additional security.

As with Espag handles, replacement handles for cockspur handles are simple to install All you require is new screws (supplied) and the proper backset. The backset is measured from the baseplate to the underside of the nose of the handle. In general Aluminium window frames usually have a backset of 9mm, whereas UPVC employs 21mm. There are a variety of other options however it is essential to take a measurement before buying the handle (see video below for how).

The spindle, or in certain cases, the entire handle assembly can be removed by unscrewing the handle. The replacement handle is then screwed in place with a pair of pozidrivs screws. This is a helpful feature for older homes where burglars are more likely to target traditional windows that can be opened from the side hinges.

Spade

There are many kinds of window handles that can be fitted to double-glazed windows made of upvc. There are two main types of handles: Cockspur and Espag.
